”You’re human too, you’re not a robot”. : A qualitative study of police officers private communication online.

Social media have opened up completely new opportunities for people to participate with their voice in the public sphere. Furthermore, we live in a world of promotional culture, where individuals who work with their personal brand, the visibility of an attractive lifestyle, are rewarded with social capital and symbolic means. Problems that arise in parallel with this are based on the premise that all individuals can participate on equal terms, which is the basis for the purpose of this study. This study aims at examining how, or if, operational police officers find that the professional role contributes to the possibilities and/or limitations of private communication on social media. While the police authority is one of Sweden's utmost authorities, and has both violence monopoly and the power to detain, there are people behind the uniforms who possess knowledge and experience that is of major social and democratic value to the public/social debate. In order to seek a deeper understanding of our topic of study, an overall question was formulated which was subsequently broken down into four different parts: How does the individual police officer experience that the professional role contributes to self-censorship in the representation of self on social media? How does the individual police officer experience that the professional role contributes to self-realization in the representation of self on social media? How does the individual police officer experience the presence of the police force on social media? How does the individual police officer experience the presence of profiled police officers on social media? To answer the questions above, eight interviews were conducted with police officers from a medium-sized city in Sweden. The results were analyzed primarily using Erving Goffman's theory of impression management in relation to Anthony Giddens theories of reflexive modernity, with elements from social psychological theories of Leon Festinger and Fritz Heider. The results showed that all informants use impression management strategies as a result of their professional role, mainly due to experienced threats. At the same time, there are more complex reasons for how the professional role contributes to self-censorship and self-realization. The conclusion we can draw from this research is that individuals negotiate the boundary between the professional role and the private role, and that self-censorship is a common form of impression management as a strategy to meet the audience’s expectations of how an individual who works as a police officer should be.Sociala medier har öppnat upp för helt nya möjligheter att delta med sin röst i det offentliga rummet. Vidare lever vi i en värld präglad av promotion-kultur, där individer som arbetar med sitt personliga varumärke, synliggörandet av en attraktiv livsstil, belönas med socialt kapital och symboliska medel. Problem som uppstår parallellt med detta grundar sig i den förutfattade meningen att alla individer kan delta på lika villkor, vilket ligger till grund för undersökningens syfte. Den här studien syftar till att undersöka hur, eller om, operativa poliser upplever att yrkesrollen bidrar till möjligheter och/eller begränsningar i den privata kommunikationen på sociala medier. Samtidigt som Polismyndigheten är en av Sveriges yttersta auktoriteter, och har både våldsmonopol och makten att frihetsberöva, är det människor bakom uniformen som besitter kunskap och erfarenhet som är av stort socialt och demokratiskt värde för samhällsdebatten. För att söka djupare förståelse för undersökningens syfte, formulerades en övergripande frågeställning som sedermera bröts ner i fyra olika delar: Hur upplever individen att yrkesrollen bidrar till självcensur i framställning av jaget på sociala medier? Hur upplever individen att yrkesrollen bidrar till självförverkligande i framställning av jaget på sociala medier? Hur upplever individen yrkeskårens officiella närvaro på sociala medier? Hur upplever individen profilpolisers närvaro på sociala medier? För att ge svar på frågeställningarna genomfördes åtta samtalsintervjuer med poliser från en mellanstor stad i Sverige. Resultatet analyserades primärt med hjälp av Erving Goffmans teori om impression management i relation till Anthony Giddens teorier om reflexiv modernitet, med inslag från socialpsykologiska teorier av Leon Festinger och Fritz Heider. Resultaten visade på att samtliga respondenter använder sig av impression management-strategier som ett resultat av sin yrkesroll, huvudsakligen på grund av en upplevd hotbild. Samtidigt finns det mer komplexa orsaker till hur yrkesrollen bidrar till självcensur och självförverkligande. Slutsatsen vi kan dra av denna undersökning är att individerna förhandlar gränsen mellan yrkesrollen och den privata rollen, samt att självcensur är en vanligt förekommande form av impression management som en strategi för att möta publikens förväntningar på hur en individ som arbetar som polis ska vara
